Based on true events, the novel follows the story of the largest mass homicide in Philadelphia’s city history. The Deerings, prosperous farmers in the southern section of Philadelphia, also known as Philadelphia’s First Ward, are subject to the changing America of 1866.
With the Civil War over at last, and the nation getting back to its feet, the Irish immigrants are one family of few that have escaped the bloody war unscathed. Yet they are met by an unseen enemy, indeed a person thought to be a friend, thought to be family.
